Researchers from the University of California, San Diego, are pioneering a sustainable cloud computing solution by repurposing 2,000 Google Pixel smartphones into a low-carbon data center. This initiative, supported by Google, aims to mitigate e-waste and the environmental impact of traditional data centers by leveraging existing smartphone hardware for university grading and research applications. The project focuses on disassembling phones to their core components and orchestrating them with Kubernetes, demonstrating a viable, eco-friendly alternative to new hardware manufacturing.
