In an initiative aimed at fostering city pride and enthusiasm for the impending FIFA World Cup, the New York City Mayor's Office has introduced a collection of budget-friendly, New York-themed soccer jerseys. This announcement closely follows the Mayor's office's excitement over a recent significant Knicks victory, showcasing a continuous engagement with the city's sports culture. These specially designed jerseys are a collaborative effort with Mazzi Sports, a family-operated apparel workshop located in Brooklyn, and embody a vintage graphic style reminiscent of the city's distinctive World Cup promotional material. Each jersey proudly displays a soccer-ball-inspired Big Apple emblem alongside a pigeon motif, with "NEW YORK CITY" prominently featured across the chest and "26" on the back, available in three striking color combinations: classic black and white, taxi-inspired yellow and black, and a versatile blue and orange-red, suitable for supporters of various New York sports teams.

These limited-edition jerseys, with only 1,500 units produced (500 per color scheme), were meticulously handcrafted at Mazzi's factory in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Priced at approximately $50, which is considerably less than typical authentic World Cup merchandise, these jerseys are designed to be affordable for all New Yorkers. They will be exclusively available for in-person purchase starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 12, at the NYC City Store. Mayor Mamdani emphasized the significance of these garments, stating that they represent more than just team allegiance; they symbolize pride in one's origins and identity, ensuring that economic barriers do not prevent residents from showcasing their love for the city. Mazzi Sports, founded by Alexander Campaz, who immigrated from Colombia to New York in 1983, has a long history in the city's apparel industry. The company notably shifted its production to medical gowns during the COVID-19 pandemic, sustaining employment for over 100 individuals, many of whom contributed to this jersey project.

This jersey launch forms part of a wider strategy by the Mayor's office to enhance the accessibility of the 2026 World Cup for New Yorkers, including securing 1,000 discounted tickets to matches at MetLife Stadium and organizing complimentary fan gatherings and viewing events throughout the city. The Mayor previously shared his vision for the World Cup, expressing a desire to be fully immersed in the event's widespread magic that enlivens the city, regardless of the tournament's location. This initiative underscores a commitment to making major sporting events inclusive and a source of collective joy and identity for the diverse population of New York.

This initiative exemplifies the power of community and local craftsmanship coming together to celebrate shared passions. By providing an affordable and locally produced symbol of civic and sports pride, the city government not only supports local businesses but also strengthens the bonds within its diverse population, encouraging a sense of belonging and collective enthusiasm that transcends economic status.
