A new platforming game, N+ Infinity Times Two, showcased at the recent Summer Game Fest Play Days event in Los Angeles, has left a strong impression as a potentially perfect video game. This title, developed by Metanet, continues the legacy of a series that began as a browser game over two decades ago, evolving through the popular Xbox Live Arcade version N+ in 2008 and N++ in 2015. The game maintains its core appeal with simple, effective controls for movement and jumping, reminiscent of classic NES gamepads, now enhanced with new multiplayer-focused gameplay.

During the event, Metanet presented two of the game's five planned modes: 'Race' and 'Tag'. 'Race' mode involves navigating intricate 2D courses, avoiding hazards, and utilizing the ninja's unique momentum. A strategic twist allows players to transform into a steerable missile upon finishing, enabling them to target competitors. 'Tag' mode is a 2v2 contest where ninjas evade hunters, with the objective being to survive the longest. Hunters in this mode can also become missiles, adding another layer of dynamic interaction. The subtle yet profound impact of player strategies quickly became apparent, from deliberately lagging to exploit leading players' mistakes, to seeking out gold pickups for bonus points, ensuring a thrilling and engaging competitive environment.

The fluid, expressive movements of the ninjas make player-versus-player interactions surprisingly deep, almost as if the original N games were always destined for this multiplayer dynamic. Tracking opponents in 'Tag' demands careful anticipation, requiring players to predict movements and cut off escape routes, turning what could be a simple chase into a complex, almost balletic confrontation. This unique blend of precise mechanics and competitive depth positions N+ Infinity Times Two to become a standout party game, reminiscent of beloved titles like TowerFall. With co-op levels also planned for its 2027 release, the game aims to deliver a comprehensive and timeless platforming experience.

This game serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of well-crafted platformers and the creative potential within the gaming community. It highlights how refined mechanics, combined with innovative multiplayer elements, can lead to deeply satisfying and memorable experiences, fostering both healthy competition and cooperative engagement among players.
