MB&F, a brand synonymous with horological innovation, has once again redefined expectations with its latest offering, the HM12 The Guardian. Unlike typical watch releases that focus on minor aesthetic changes or internal upgrades, MB&F has unveiled a creation that seamlessly merges intricate watchmaking with a formidable 15-kilogram robot. This audacious project, born from a five-year-old idea to transform a watch into a robot's head, encapsulates MB&F's core tenets: a nostalgic nod to science fiction, dynamic sculptural art, and mechanical watchmaking pushed to its creative limits.

The HM12 The Guardian is more than just a watch; it is a sophisticated titanium wristwatch designed to be the central component, or 'head,' of a robot companion developed in collaboration with Swiss clockmaker L’Epée 1839. This horological marvel boasts a flying tourbillon, jumping hours, trailing minutes, and a double-sided micro-rotor, all encased within a sharply angular design that eschews conventional timepiece aesthetics in favor of a futuristic, anime-inspired mech faceplate. The sheer complexity of the endeavor, originally envisioned for the brand's 20th anniversary, escalated into a full-scale mechanical object comprising nearly 1,500 components between the watch and its robotic counterpart, reflecting Maximilian Büsser’s consistent rebellion against traditional watch forms since founding MB&F in 2005.

Adding to its distinctive character, the HM12 The Guardian incorporates an imaginative mechanical 'face shield' complication. This unique feature, operated by a left-side crown, employs over 200 components to gradually conceal the watch's face with protective shutters, mimicking a robotic visor. Beyond its primary function, the robot companion is equipped with a mechanical thermometer in its chest, a loupe concealed in one arm for inspecting the movement, and a UV flashlight in the other for activating the watch's luminescence. When detached from its Velcro strap, the HM12 effortlessly clips onto the robot's body, transforming from a wearable timepiece into an impressive mechanical sculpture. In a luxury watch market often dominated by vintage reissues and safe commercial strategies, MB&F continues to carve its own path, offering only 36 examples of the HM12 across blue, green, and purple editions, ensuring that a select few collectors will soon possess these extraordinary robot clocks.

The HM12 The Guardian stands as a testament to the power of imagination and relentless pursuit of innovation in the world of horology. It challenges conventional boundaries, demonstrating that art, engineering, and storytelling can converge to create objects that are not only functional but also deeply inspiring. This creation encourages us to embrace creativity, explore the unconventional, and push the limits of what is possible, fostering a spirit of wonder and forward-thinking in every endeavor.
