Kinepolis Group, a prominent cinema chain headquartered in Belgium, has finalized a significant transaction, acquiring the U.S. operations of Showcase Cinemas from Harbor Lights Entertainment. This strategic deal, valued at $30 million, marks a notable expansion for Kinepolis, integrating 13 cinema locations and 164 screens into its extensive global network. The move is set to bolster Kinepolis's presence across the East Coast of the United States, including key states like Massachusetts and New York, and is expected to revolutionize the cinematic experience for patrons in these areas.

The acquisition, anticipated to reach completion by late summer, includes direct ownership of six of the 13 cinema properties, with the remaining locations operating under existing lease agreements. Showcase Cinemas, formerly part of National Amusements under the Redstone family and later controlled by the Ellison family via Harbor Lights Entertainment, has been a significant player in the U.S. exhibition market. In 2025, these high-end Showcase Cinemas welcomed approximately four million visitors, generating revenues exceeding $90 million, underscoring their strong market performance and potential for future growth under Kinepolis.

Kinepolis is known for its commitment to providing a premium cinematic experience. The acquired Showcase Cinemas align with this philosophy, featuring amenities such as advanced food and beverage options, multiple premium large format screens, and state-of-the-art stadium-style reclining seats in 80% of their auditoriums. These features are designed to enhance audience comfort and immersion. The cinemas will continue to operate under the well-recognized Showcase brand, ensuring continuity and leveraging its established reputation within the American market.

Eddy Duquenne, CEO of Kinepolis Group, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, highlighting its strategic importance. He stated that this expansion will strengthen Kinepolis's market position in the U.S., extending its influence from Michigan to the East Coast. Duquenne emphasized that the deal provides Kinepolis with valuable assets and a skilled team, crucial for implementing its operational model and corporate strategy to elevate the movie-going experience. Furthermore, the acquisition secures valuable real estate, presenting future opportunities for redevelopment and optimization to further enhance Kinepolis's portfolio.

Globally, Kinepolis operates an impressive network of cinemas, with 63 locations spread across various European countries including Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Poland. In North America, the company maintains a substantial footprint with 35 locations in Canada and, post-acquisition, 24 locations across the United States. This expansion solidifies Kinepolis's standing as a major international cinema operator, continually seeking opportunities to grow and innovate within the global entertainment industry.

This transaction significantly expands Kinepolis's global reach, integrating Showcase Cinemas' strong operational history and premium offerings into its portfolio. The acquisition provides Kinepolis with a strategic foothold in key U.S. markets, promising enhanced cinematic experiences for patrons and unlocking potential for future development and market optimization. This move reinforces Kinepolis's commitment to growth and its vision for the future of cinema exhibition.
