Former Fox News Host Steve Hilton Secures Second Place in California Primary, Prepares for Gubernatorial Challenge Against Xavier Becerra

Hilton, a British-born newcomer to the political landscape, outperformed progressive candidate Tom Steyer, who had been closely trailing in the vote count but ultimately failed to close the margin.
The Republican candidate maintained a substantial lead of at least 300,000 votes and a four percentage point advantage over Steyer since the primary election a week prior, despite Becerra moving into first place days earlier. On Tuesday, a significant ballot count of over 600,000 votes saw Steyer narrow the gap slightly. However, Hilton still held a lead of 200,000 votes and 2.5 percentage points after this count. With only nine percent of votes remaining, The Associated Press officially declared the race, confirming Hilton's advancement. This outcome concludes Steyer's ambitious campaign to enact various reforms in California, including activist, worker-focused, AI-regulation, and environmental policies, alongside a strong stance against the Paramount acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. Despite spending over $200 million on his campaign, Steyer garnered more than two million votes. Political observers are left to ponder what might have been, as Congresswoman Katie Porter received over 400,000 votes, a figure that potentially could have secured Steyer's victory had the fellow liberal Democrat not run.
Hilton, previously an advisor to former Tory Prime Minister David Cameron in England, relocated to Silicon Valley in the early 2010s with his wife, Rachel Whetstone, who pursued high-profile communications roles at Google, Uber, and Netflix. During this period, Hilton engaged in entrepreneurial ventures and hosted a Sunday program on Fox News for six years. While advocating conservative viewpoints, his approach on the network was noted for being more inclusive and less contentious than some of his peers. Hilton also gained television recognition in the United Kingdom through the political satire In the Thick of It, where the character Stewart Pearson, a spin doctor known for his love of buzzwords, was reportedly based on him. Hilton now faces a significant challenge against Becerra. Beyond securing the endorsement of Donald Trump in a state frequently opposing the former president, Hilton must overcome considerable partisan obstacles. A Republican has not secured the governorship since Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006, and since then, no Republican candidate has achieved more than 41 percent of the vote. Hilton intends to frame his campaign around this very dynamic, arguing that California's current issues stem from prolonged Democratic governance. During the primary, he emphasized this point, focusing on the eight-year tenure of term-limited Democrat Gavin Newsom. Hilton's policy proposals sharply diverge from even a moderate Democrat like Becerra, advocating for reduced taxes, deregulation, and the construction of low-density housing to address the state's housing crisis. Additionally, Hilton has differentiated himself on the Hollywood front, proposing a major entertainment tax-credit program offering up to 60 percent per project with no annual cap, and eligibility extending to both below-the-line and post-production expenses. Becerra, conversely, has adopted a more cautious approach, though it remains uncertain whether this will persuade many Democratic entertainment industry workers to shift their political allegiance. Becerra also possesses considerably more electoral experience, having won 14 elections in California, many of which were easy victories as a Congressman. Regardless of the victor, both candidates can anticipate a lengthy term, as a unique aspect of California's electoral history is that every governor since 1942 has served more than one term.
