ByteDance Diversifies AI Chip Supply Amid US-China Tech Tensions

ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, is actively pursuing new sources for artificial intelligence chips, engaging with Chinese firms Iluvatar CoreX and Baidu. This strategic pivot is largely influenced by the ongoing technological competition between the United States and China, which has constrained access to advanced foreign-made semiconductors.

Reports suggest that Iluvatar CoreX is poised to supply at least 50,000 AI inference chips to ByteDance this year, primarily to support the expansion of its Doubao chatbot. This collaboration positions Iluvatar CoreX as ByteDance's third significant domestic GPU provider, joining Huawei and Cambricon, and underscores the growing capability of Chinese manufacturers to offer alternatives to international chip technologies. Furthermore, ByteDance is also considering Baidu's Kunlunxin chips, which are already utilized by Tencent Holdings, signifying a broader trend towards domestic sourcing.

This shift occurs against a backdrop where Nvidia, a leading global chip manufacturer, acknowledges the substantial progress made by China's AI chip sector, particularly by Huawei. Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, has openly recognized that US export controls have severely limited the company's advanced AI processor sales in China, compelling them to largely withdraw from that market. Consequently, Chinese GPU and AI chip makers captured a significant portion—nearly 41%—of their domestic AI accelerator server market last year, challenging Nvidia's previous dominance and aligning with Beijing's strategic imperative for greater independence in advanced chip technology.

The current landscape in the AI chip industry showcases a dynamic environment where geopolitical factors significantly influence corporate strategies and market structures. The drive for technological autonomy, particularly in critical areas like AI, not only fosters domestic innovation but also promotes diversification in supply chains, ultimately strengthening national technological resilience and global competitiveness.
