A poignant period unfolds for enthusiasts of the Destiny universe as Destiny 2 enters a dormant phase following its ultimate content release. Even the long-standing weekly updates, a ritual for many, are concluding. It appears all good things must eventually draw to a close.

Numerous observers have attributed the conclusion of Bungie's seminal looter-shooter to Sony, subsequent to its substantial 2022 acquisition of the developer. The decision to champion Marathon as a successor has also sparked debate. However, the situation is more nuanced than it initially appears.

According to former community manager Liana Ruppert, the challenges Bungie faced predated Sony's involvement. Ruppert disclosed via social media that "Bungie was teetering on the edge before the Sony acquisition. Had it not been acquired then, the studio was perilously close to ceasing operations, at least concerning Destiny. It was an urgent takeover."

Even from an external perspective, it was evident that Bungie encountered difficulties well before its integration with Sony. The renowned studio had parted ways with Activision in 2019 to independently publish the MMO-lite title. Over the years, alterations to content delivery, microtransactions, and pricing models, coupled with a shrinking player base and internal workforce reductions, made the studio's pursuit of a new strategic alliance unsurprising.

This path ultimately led to Sony's substantial investment to secure Bungie, a partnership that hasn't uniformly yielded positive outcomes. Just last month, Sony reported a considerable impairment loss against Bungie for the 2025 fiscal year, signaling that both Destiny 2 and Marathon have fallen short of expectations. Despite the acquisition, financial targets remain elusive.

On a brighter note, the final content update for Destiny 2 has temporarily boosted its player engagement, and a fan-led appeal for a "Destiny 3" is gaining traction, despite the long odds. Perhaps the proposed "Destiny Infinity" concept, intended to revitalize the series, is not yet beyond reach. This narrative underscores the enduring power of community and resilience in the face of adversity, proving that even in challenging times, innovation and hope can prevail.
