BMW's M2 model is set to receive a significant update for 2027, with the introduction of an all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant, the M2 xDrive. This marks a notable departure from its traditional rear-wheel-drive configuration, promising enhanced performance and broader appeal. The new model, slated for release this summer, will feature a more potent powertrain and advanced driving dynamics.

Under the hood, the 2027 M2 xDrive will house BMW's robust twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, delivering an impressive 473 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. This powerful engine will be exclusively mated to an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission. While the traditional rear-wheel-drive M2 will continue to offer a manual gearbox option, the xDrive version focuses on maximizing acceleration and traction.

The addition of all-wheel drive dramatically improves the M2's acceleration figures. The M2 xDrive is projected to sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a mere 3.6 seconds, a 0.3-second improvement over its rear-wheel-drive counterpart. With a one-foot rollout, this time further drops to an astonishing 3.3 seconds. The vehicle can reach 124 mph in just 12.8 seconds, and its top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, which can be extended to 177 mph with the optional M Driver's Package.

The M2's all-wheel-drive system is engineered with a rear-wheel bias, ensuring that power is primarily delivered to the rear wheels during normal driving conditions. The all-wheel-drive engagement occurs seamlessly when the rear tires begin to lose traction, providing optimal grip and stability. This intelligent system is complemented by an Active M Differential and M-specific traction control, offering drivers customizable settings to fine-tune their driving experience. A dedicated 2WD mode is also available, which deactivates Dynamic Stability Control for those seeking a more traditional BMW rear-wheel-drive feel.

Visually, the M2 xDrive will feature staggered M alloy wheels, with 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the rear. For enhanced track performance, optional track-specific tires will be available. Stopping power is provided by standard M Compound brakes, featuring six-piston calipers at the front and single-piston calipers at the rear, ensuring responsive and consistent braking performance.

The 2027 BMW M2 with M xDrive is scheduled to hit the market this summer, with U.S. models proudly displaying the xDrive badge. Pricing for this high-performance coupe will start at $74,950, which includes a destination charge of $1,350. Comparatively, the 2026 rear-wheel-drive M2, equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, currently begins at $70,350, a price point that is expected to see an increase for the upcoming 2027 model year.

The introduction of the M2 xDrive variant underscores BMW's commitment to evolving its high-performance offerings. By integrating an all-wheel-drive option, the brand aims to make the M2 appealing to an even broader spectrum of enthusiasts, further solidifying its position as a top-selling M model.
